David, these are some good gems. It's up to leadership to provide an environment where employees can safely ask the why questions so that they can better understand the missions. Sometimes the answer to those questions requires an act of faith on the part of the employee, especially on those judgment calls that are close to a 50/50. It is helpful for an employee to at least know that much.

Ladders and Walls: Tools For Making Big Career Decisions

Most of us spend our early lives climbing a ladder that others have placed before us. We follow the prescribed steps—school, career, relationships—without questioning whether the wall we’re climbing is the right one. Then one day, we reach the top and realize something unsettling: we don’t know if this is where we actually want to be. The truth is, many of us were never taught to look inward. We’ve become experts at meeting expectations but amateurs at understanding our own desires. So when faced with life’s infinite possibilities, we feel lost, seeking direction from external sources instead of our own instincts. The key to finding our true path isn’t in climbing faster or higher—it’s in stopping to ask if we’re even on the right ladder. Through journaling and deep self-reflection, we can begin to unearth our true selves, translating the fragments of identity we uncover into a life that aligns with who we really are.

Better Decision Making Under Pressure

We spend a lot of time worried about what they will think. But who are they, really? When you sit with it, you realize they aren’t a real group—just a phantom audience we imagine judging our every move. And yet, we let them dictate our decisions, adding pressure that isn’t even real. The truth? Most people aren’t thinking about you nearly as much as you think they are. They’re too busy thinking about themselves. Step one to freeing yourself from unnecessary stress: stop living for them. Instead, focus on the expectations you hold for yourself, your commitments to your family, and how you show up for the people who truly matter. They won’t miss you—and you won’t miss them.
